Plot 56 Sapling Road Community Allotment

Plot 56 Sapling Road Community Allotment

Plot 56 has been vacant for a number of years. The reason being – the previous plot holder had a greenhouse collapse and decided to use a digger to scrape all the glass away – but this included all the top soil as well! Since then, the council was unable to let the plot and it became overgrown. We’ve started to compost a massive amount of wood chip and grass cuttings on the site with an aim to rebuilding the soil structure and one day return it to a lettable state – however in the meantime we are aiming to create a community plot where people can get involved in growing food for their family, friends and hopefully donate some produce the local foodbank every month.

If you are interested in joining us in renovating the plot, please send us a message via the form below. This is a good project to get involved in if you would like to get a taste of what having your own allotment entails as there are lots of jobs which need doing.

Jobs to be done:

Clear off old ground cover / weeds
Cutting back self seeded trees & (winter) pruning the fruit trees and bushes.
Composting – this is a continuous process – we aim to move the entire pile towards the back of the new polytunnel. If you have a lawn and want to donate grass cuttings we’d love to hear from you.
Building the Polytunnel – this will take quite a few of us.
Creating new raised beds inside the polytunnel and outside.
Fixing the shed – not sure what state it’s in but definitely needs renovating

There are a number of established fruit trees on the plot which will need to be harvested with an aim to provide some fruit to the foodbank and some to go to cider making.

Things we need:

If you can help with any of the following please get in touch.

  • Flags for under the polytunnel as there is a lot of horsetail we need to get under control.
  • Paint & wood stain
  • Pallets / timber
  • Grass cuttings, coffee grounds, manure
  • Topsoil/compost

We will update this page with some photos and more information asap.
